These fine original colour plates are from Fay-Yen-Fah by Charles Templeton Crocker. Crocker’s work was illustrated with 53 full page mounted color plates from paintings by Hubert Julian Stowitt. This magnificent work was printed in 1928 in a limited edition of 200 copies. Stowitt was the master designer of the the sets and costumes of the “Fay-Yen-Fah” Chinese opera. He lived in Asia for many years, capturing the essence of the culture and people in his paintings. Upon his return, Stowitt was celebrated as “America’s First Ambassador of International Culture.” In 1932 he moved to southern California where he continued to paint, perform, completed book manuscripts and appeared in a several motion pictures.
